Tracing the Ancient Footsteps of the Komodo Dragon

Long before the first travelers set sail from Bali or Lombok to discover new horizons, the islands around Labuan Bajo were already home to one of the world’s most mysterious creatures: the Komodo Dragon. These massive lizards, often called “living dinosaurs,” have survived for millions of years, making Komodo Island and Rinca Island a rare time capsule of natural history.

Early sailors feared these “giant monitors,” whispering tales of fire-breathing monsters in the tropics. In the early 20th century, Dutch explorers finally documented them, and the world was fascinated by this ancient animal. Today, visitors trek through Komodo National Park to witness the dragons in their natural habitat — a rare privilege, considering they are an endangered species.

But the story is not just about the dragons. It’s about balance. The park was established in 1980 to protect both the creatures and the unique marine ecosystems that surround them. From the coral reefs of Manta Point to the beaches of Pink Beach, every corner holds history written by nature.

For travelers, meeting a Komodo Dragon isn’t only about the thrill; it’s about connecting with a chapter of Earth’s history that still breathes today.
